Omaha, NE — Fire danger, poor air quality, and back-to-back thunderstorm chances are converging on eastern Nebraska, prompting a series of spring weather alerts through next Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, strong southerly winds are fueling an increased fire risk today and Thursday, especially along the I-80 corridor. Gusts may reach 30 mph. On Thursday evening, thunderstorms return with a 15–30% chance of severe storms between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. The primary threat is large hail, but damaging winds and isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out.

Smoke-related air quality concerns also persist for eastern counties including Douglas, Sarpy, and Lancaster. From 9 p.m. tonight through 10 a.m. Thursday, sensitive groups should avoid outdoor exertion due to elevated PM 2.5 particulates.

The weekend remains volatile. A second wave of storms is forecast for Sunday, which could disrupt Easter activities. Showers and isolated storms are likely by late Sunday into Sunday night, with winds gusting to 19 mph.

Extended 5-Day Forecast for Omaha:

  • Thursday: Showers likely after 4 p.m. Storms possible by evening. High near 82°F.
  • Friday: Partly sunny. Breezy with a high near 60°F.
  • Saturday: Mostly sunny with a high of 61°F.
