Hastings, NE – A powerful winter storm swept across Nebraska from March 18-19, bringing heavy snowfall and damaging wind gusts that led to widespread power outages and infrastructure damage.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings, Waco recorded the highest snowfall total at 12 inches, followed by 3N York at 11 inches and multiple locations, including ENE Hastings and Fairfield, receiving 7 inches. Snow accumulation varied across the state, with many areas reporting between 4 and 6 inches.
In addition to the snowfall, the storm produced severe wind gusts, with the highest recorded at 72 mph near Kearney. Hastings Airport saw 71 mph gusts, while several other locations reported speeds exceeding 60 mph. These intense winds, combined with the heavy, wet snow, caused numerous reports of downed power lines, tree damage, and outages across the state.
The NWS stated that while skies have since cleared, the storm left behind significant snow cover, particularly in central and eastern Nebraska. Authorities urged residents to exercise caution while traveling, as residual snow and ice may still impact road conditions.
Officials thanked residents who contributed snowfall and wind reports, noting that such data is vital for tracking severe weather impacts. As the region recovers, forecasters continue monitoring conditions for any further winter weather threats.
