Hastings, Neb. – Severe thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across south-central Nebraska Friday evening, with the greatest risk coming between 5 and 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop late in the day, with some intensifying into severe storms south and west of the Tri-Cities. The main hazards include hail up to the size of quarters and localized wind gusts reaching 60 mph. While a tornado is not likely, forecasters note there is a small chance of rotation.

Communities such as Kearney, Grand Island, and Hastings could see quick-hitting downpours and strong winds during the commute and early evening hours. Drivers are urged to use caution, as reduced visibility and hail could create dangerous road conditions.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during the peak storm window, and keep devices charged in case of power outages.

The severe weather risk should taper off after 10 p.m., though scattered showers may linger into the night. Additional updates and advisories are possible if storms strengthen.
