HASTINGS, Neb. – Parts of Nebraska face a heightened severe weather threat tonight, with storms capable of producing quarter-sized hail and damaging winds up to 60 mph between 6 and 11 p.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the marginal risk zone has expanded, with several northwestern areas upgraded to a slight risk. While storms are not expected to become widespread, a few could turn strong, posing hazards for travelers and outdoor evening plans.
Communities including North Platte, Broken Bow, and McCook fall within the greatest risk zone. Motorists on U.S. Highways 83 and 281 should be alert for rapidly changing conditions, especially as hail and wind-driven rain could reduce visibility. The storm window is expected to linger into the overnight hours with scattered showers possibly lasting into Saturday.
Officials urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary driving during peak storm hours, and monitor NOAA weather radio or mobile alerts for warnings. Power outages are possible where winds peak near severe limits.
Storm chances will ease by Saturday, but additional updates may be issued if conditions shift.
