Hastings, Neb. – Severe storms packing large hail could hit parts of central and eastern Nebraska Monday afternoon, with the highest risk focused near and east of Highway 281 between 3 and 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, most of the state falls under a marginal to slight risk for severe weather Monday, with Grand Island, Hastings, Lincoln, and York all within the zone of potential impact. The primary threat is large hail, but damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.

Communities from Columbus to Beatrice should prepare for rapidly changing weather, especially during the Monday evening commute. Outdoor plans may need to shift indoors, and residents are urged to secure loose objects, monitor weather alerts, and ensure mobile devices are fully charged in case of outages.

Drivers along I-80 and U.S. Highway 81 should be alert for sudden downpours and hail between late afternoon and evening. Monday’s risk area is similar to past May systems that triggered hail damage across the region.

This weather threat is expected to move through by late Monday night, but additional updates will be issued over the weekend as timing and intensity forecasts become clearer. Stay tuned to NWS Hastings and local emergency officials for the latest.
