HASTINGS, Neb. – Residents across south-central Nebraska face a significant threat of severe weather Monday night, with the potential for damaging straight-line winds and large hail capable of causing property damage. The most intense period for storms is expected to begin in the mid-evening and continue through the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the region is under an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather, indicating that numerous severe thunderstorms are possible. The primary hazards are destructive winds and large hail, creating a danger for homes, vehicles, and agriculture. A similar, though slightly lesser, threat for scattered severe storms will persist through Tuesday night.
Communities including Grand Island, Kearney, and Hastings are in the main risk area. High winds could lead to downed trees and power outages. Officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor objects like patio furniture and trash cans and to ensure mobile devices are fully charged in case of utility disruptions.
The stormy pattern arrives ahead of a major heatwave, with temperatures climbing into the mid-90s by Thursday and approaching 100 degrees over the weekend. Alerts will remain active overnight, and residents should have multiple ways to receive urgent weather warnings.
