Hastings, Neb. – Nebraska residents should prepare for severe storms moving through the state Monday evening, with the highest threat for strong winds and hail centered across central counties. Damaging wind gusts topping 60 mph and quarter-size hail are possible between 6 p.m. and midnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the strongest storms are expected to develop as activity pushes east from the high plains. The highest risk zone includes North Platte, Broken Bow, and Kearney, while areas from Hastings to York face a marginal risk. Storms are expected to weaken as they track farther east into Lincoln and Beatrice.
Travelers on Interstate 80 could face sudden bursts of wind and reduced visibility during the evening hours. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, move vehicles under shelter, and avoid driving during the most intense storms. While the tornado threat remains very low, localized flooding from heavy downpours is possible in spots receiving one to two inches of rain.
The severe risk will diminish after midnight, but additional updates are possible if storms linger.
