HASTINGS, Neb. – Residents across southern Nebraska and northern Kansas should prepare for severe thunderstorms moving into the region late Tuesday, with the most significant threats arriving between 5 p.m. and midnight. The primary concerns from the developing storm system are large hail and damaging straight-line winds that could impact travel and cause property damage.

According to the National Weather Service, the strongest storms may produce wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph and hail as large as ping pong balls. While widespread, the NWS notes that an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, with the greatest potential for tornadic activity centered over north-central Kansas. The area includes communities like Smith Center and Phillipsburg, which are under an Enhanced Risk for severe weather.

Major travel corridors, including Interstate 80 near Kearney and Grand Island, could face hazardous conditions as the storms intensify this evening. A broader Slight Risk area covers much of southern Nebraska, including Hastings.

Officials urge residents to secure outdoor furniture and decorations that could become airborne in high winds. The severe weather threat is expected to decrease after midnight as the system weakens and pushes eastward. Stay tuned to local weather alerts for possible watches and warnings issued throughout the evening.
