Hastings, Nebraska – Residents across central Nebraska face a heightened wildfire risk Sunday as dry, breezy conditions prompt a Red Flag Warning from noon until 9 p.m. Strong south winds and dangerously low humidity could cause any fire to spread rapidly, making outdoor burning especially hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, winds are expected to reach sustained speeds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels will plummet to between 15% and 20%, creating ideal conditions for fast-moving wildfires. The warning primarily affects areas north and west of Hastings, including Grand Island, Kearney, and North Platte.

Residents are urged to avoid using outdoor fire pits, grills, or any equipment that could produce sparks. If you must be outdoors, secure loose materials and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass.

The fire danger doesn’t end Sunday. Forecasters warn of additional critical fire weather threats through much of next week, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. Stay updated with the latest advisories and be prepared to act quickly if evacuation orders are issued.
