Alliance, NE – Dangerous crosswinds and damaging gusts up to 60 mph are affecting much of the Nebraska Panhandle today, prompting a High Wind Warning through 2 p.m. MST Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.
The warning includes Dawes, Box Butte, and Sioux Counties, with sustained northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph. The strongest gusts are expected in open areas near Chadron, Alliance, and Harrison, where travel could become especially hazardous.
Forecasters say high-profile vehicles, including campers and tractor-trailers, face the greatest risk from strong crosswinds along highways such as U.S. 385 and Highway 20. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and avoid sudden maneuvers.
While widespread damage is not expected, the winds could cause minor property damage and blow around unsecured outdoor items. Conditions should begin to improve by mid-afternoon as winds gradually weaken.
Residents should continue to exercise caution outdoors and stay alert for local travel advisories.
