Scottsbluff, Nebraska – Strong storms could slam parts of the Nebraska Panhandle Friday afternoon, with large hail and 60+ mph winds threatening travel and outdoor activities between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, there is a slight risk for severe weather mainly east of the Laramie Range, with the best potential for damaging storms across the southern Panhandle. Cities including Sidney, Bridgeport, Kimball, Alliance, Harrisburg, and Scottsbluff are all at risk as the system moves through.
Forecasters warn that all severe weather hazards are possible, but large hail up to 2 inches in diameter and strong wind gusts are the most likely threats. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Drivers along Highways 385 and 26 should be alert for rapidly changing conditions and reduced visibility. Residents are urged to move vehicles into shelter, secure loose outdoor items, and have a way to receive weather alerts.
This weather system marks one of the first widespread severe risks of the season for western Nebraska. While the strongest cells are expected during the late afternoon, storms may linger into early evening.
Additional updates are expected later today, and further watches or warnings may be issued. Stay tuned to local emergency channels.
