Rapid City, S.D. – Strong thunderstorms will continue to develop across western and central South Dakota overnight, with a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect until 3 a.m. Saturday. The watch also extends into northwestern Nebraska, covering Cherry and Sheridan counties.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, storms could bring damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, large hail, and frequent lightning. Counties under the watch in South Dakota include Pennington, Meade, Lyman, Hughes, Jones, Todd, Tripp, and Oglala Lakota, among others.

Drivers along I-90 near Rapid City and east toward Chamberlain may encounter rapidly changing conditions, including torrential downpours and reduced visibility. In Nebraska, travel through Valentine and Gordon could also be affected as storms move eastward through the night.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid travel during severe weather, and keep phones charged in case of power outages. The NWS recommends seeking shelter indoors and staying away from windows during strong thunderstorms.

The watch remains in effect until 3 a.m., with additional advisories possible if storms persist into Saturday morning.
