Nebraska – Flags snap violently in the wind across central Nebraska this morning as powerful northwest gusts sweep over open farmland. Drivers are already feeling the push of strong crosswinds on exposed highways.

Temperatures hover near 42°F early this morning in Hastings, but the bigger story is the wind. Gusts are already approaching 50 mph, and stronger bursts are expected through the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. across much of central and south-central Nebraska and parts of north-central Kansas.

Sustained northwest winds of 35 to 45 mph will continue through the day, with gusts reaching up to 65 mph. Winds that strong can damage trees, blow around unsecured objects, and make driving difficult.

Travel may become especially hazardous along Interstate 80, Highway 281, and Highway 6 where strong crosswinds can push vehicles across lanes. High-profile vehicles like semis, campers, and box trucks face the greatest risk.

Blowing dust could also develop across open fields, especially near recently burned areas in western Dawson County. Reduced visibility may occur suddenly on rural roads.

Forecasters say light snow showers may briefly develop this afternoon north and east of the Tri-Cities region. Accumulations should stay under one inch, but blowing snow may reduce visibility in isolated areas.

Temperatures drop sharply tonight as winds slowly ease. Wind chills could fall between -5°F and -15°F, unusually cold for mid-March.

Calmer weather arrives Monday with sunshine returning, though temperatures remain cool.

A dramatic warmup follows quickly. By midweek, highs surge into the mid-70s, signaling an early taste of spring across Nebraska.
