Omaha, NE – Residents across Nebraska and parts of southwestern Iowa are under a Red Flag Warning today, as strong winds and low relative humidity create conditions for rapid fire spread.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Omaha/Valley announced the warning early Wednesday, effective from noon to 5 p.m. According to the NWS, wind gusts may reach 60 mph, with humidity levels dropping to as low as 28 percent. Areas impacted include Knox, Cedar, and Douglas counties in Nebraska and Pottawattamie and Mills counties in Iowa.

Similarly, south-central Nebraska faces a heightened fire threat with a warning in place until 6 p.m., the NWS Hastings office stated. This region could see humidity levels dip to 20 percent, with gusts up to 50 mph. Western and north-central Nebraska will experience similar conditions, particularly in the Sandhills and Valentine areas, where wind speeds could peak at 60 mph.

Officials warn that any outdoor fire activity, including burning, should be avoided. Fires could spread quickly and become uncontrollable under these conditions.

Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and avoid outdoor activities that may spark fires.
