Nebraska — Flags snap hard against their poles this morning, and loose snow skitters across parking lots. The air feels sharp and restless. Wind is the first problem today, but cold is waiting just behind it.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for Omaha and surrounding areas of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa through early evening. Northwest winds increase through the morning, with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph. High-profile vehicles may struggle on open roadways, especially along I-80 and I-29. Brief snow showers are possible later today, though little accumulation is expected. Visibility may drop suddenly when snow combines with gusty winds.

Temperatures climb into the low 40s this afternoon, but that warmth will not last. Winds ease tonight as colder air settles in. By Thursday night, readings fall below zero, setting up a dangerous stretch of winter weather.

From Thursday through Saturday night, forecasters warn of bitter cold and hazardous wind chills. The coldest period is expected late Thursday night into Friday morning, when wind chills may dip between 20 and 35 degrees below zero. Frostbite can develop quickly in these conditions. Outdoor plans should be limited, and exposed skin should be covered fully.

Snow chances return late Friday into Saturday. While amounts appear light for now, even minor snowfall could lead to flash freezing as temperatures remain extremely cold. Roads that melt during the day may refreeze quickly after sunset, creating slick travel conditions.

Looking ahead, 6–10 day outlooks keep the central Plains colder than normal into late January. Storm tracks remain active, suggesting additional snow chances next week while cold air lingers.
