OMAHA, Neb. – A golden fall weekend will bring one last stretch of warmth across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa before a sharp cooldown sweeps in early next week. Highs near the mid-80s on Sunday will drop into the 60s by Monday as a cold front pushes through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, breezy south winds will fuel Sunday’s warmth, with gusts up to 30 mph ahead of the front. That front could trigger isolated thunderstorms late Sunday afternoon, mainly along and east of I-29 from Council Bluffs to Missouri Valley. By Monday, cooler north winds will usher in drier air and a notable drop in temperatures, signaling the area’s first real taste of mid-October chill.

Travelers along I-80 and I-29 should stay alert for brief gusty showers Sunday evening. Temperatures will fall rapidly after sunset Monday, so those attending pumpkin patches, outdoor games, or early Halloween events should dress in layers.

Residents are encouraged to check gutters and clear leaves before Monday’s rain to prevent clogs and minor flooding. Cooler nights by midweek could flirt with upper 40s, a sign that frost may not be far off as fall deepens.

The region’s next chance for more widespread showers appears by midweek, with another system tracking in from the west.
