Omaha, Neb. – Heat is already building across the Omaha metro late Monday morning, and the most dangerous conditions are still hours away. Asphalt is warming quickly, humidity continues to climb, and a prolonged stretch of dangerous summer heat will peak this afternoon across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. CDT Monday for eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa, including Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, Fremont, Nebraska City, Blair, Papillion, Council Bluffs, Shenandoah, Atlantic, and surrounding communities. Afternoon heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees are expected, creating an elevated risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Late Monday morning still offers a brief opportunity to finish outdoor chores before temperatures surge. Highs will reach around 101 degrees, while southwest winds remain relatively light. Anyone working outdoors should schedule frequent breaks, drink water often, and move strenuous activities to cooler parts of the day whenever possible.
Drivers on Interstate 80, Interstate 680, Interstate 480, and Highway 75 should keep extra water inside their vehicles. High pavement temperatures increase stress on tires and engines, while anyone stranded without air conditioning could face dangerous heat exposure in a short amount of time.
A slight chance of thunderstorms develops late Monday night into early Tuesday, but many communities will remain dry. Tuesday brings another hot day with highs near 90 degrees, followed by a gradual cooldown into Wednesday as highs settle into the mid-80s under partly sunny skies.
Additional scattered showers become possible Wednesday night into Thursday, offering another chance to trim temperatures after several days of intense heat. While widespread severe weather is not indicated at this time, an isolated strong thunderstorm cannot be completely ruled out later this week.
Long-range outlooks continue to favor above-normal temperatures returning later next week, suggesting this break from extreme heat may be temporary.
