Nebraska and western Iowa wake up wrapped in thick fog, with headlights fading into gray just a few car lengths ahead. Travel feels slow and uncertain early, especially on open stretches near the Missouri River, setting the tone for a changing winter pattern.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, areas of dense fog continue this morning across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, including Omaha, Council Bluffs, and surrounding communities. Visibility drops below a mile at times, creating travel issues on I-80, I-29, and Highway 75. A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for parts of the region.

Fog gradually thins later today, allowing temperatures to rise into the lower 50s. Travel conditions improve for a time Saturday, with drier weather and partial sun helping roads recover during peak holiday movement. That window won’t last long.

Changes arrive Sunday. Light snow develops, paired with brisk northwest winds that may gust over 25 mph. While snowfall totals look light, blowing snow could briefly reduce visibility, especially on rural highways and elevated bridges. Plan extra time if traveling Sunday afternoon or evening, as conditions may deteriorate quickly.

Sunday night marks a sharper winter turn. Temperatures drop into the teens, and wind chills fall even lower. Any moisture left on roads may flash freeze, increasing the risk for slick spots early Monday. Drivers should slow down and remain alert, particularly before sunrise.

Monday stays cold but calmer, with sunshine returning and highs only reaching the mid-20s. The cold pattern holds into midweek, keeping winter firmly in place as New Year’s Eve arrives Wednesday night. Current signals suggest dry but chilly conditions heading into 2026.
