Omaha, NE – Flurries swirl across the Missouri River valley this morning as light snow settles over eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, marking the start of the season’s first December weather event. With temperatures near 20°F and visibility dipping below half a mile at times, even modest snowfall could make travel tricky across I-80 and Highway 75 through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, 1 to 4 inches of snow will accumulate from Lincoln to Council Bluffs, with the heaviest totals southeast of Omaha. Roads will become snow-covered, especially on untreated surfaces, and wind gusts up to 15 mph could reduce visibility during bursts of heavier snow.

Drivers should plan extra time for the commute, as the hazardous stretch extends through late afternoon. Once snow tapers by evening, skies will gradually clear, but bitter cold will follow — lows near 9°F tonight may create flash-freeze conditions, leaving lingering slick spots into Tuesday morning.

Tuesday brings a break in precipitation with partly sunny skies and highs near 31°F, though another clipper system midweek may bring flurries and a reinforcing shot of cold.

5-Day Outlook (Omaha, NE / Council Bluffs, IA):

  • Tuesday: Partly sunny, high 31°F.
  • Wednesday: Mostly cloudy, high 32°F.
  • Thursday: Sunny, high 18°F.
  • Friday: Partly sunny, high 32°F.
  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy, high 40°F.
