Nebraska begins Monday wrapped in low clouds and lingering fog, clinging to river valleys and side streets. Headlights glow through the haze, and cold air settles close to the ground.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, patchy fog developed early Monday, especially along the Missouri River near Omaha and Carter Lake. Visibility may drop below a half mile at times, mainly through mid-morning. Temperatures hover near 32 degrees, creating slick conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and ramps.
Today stays mostly cloudy with highs near 53. Calm winds help fog linger longer than usual. School drop-offs and the morning commute may feel slow. Drivers along I-80, I-480, and Highway 75 should expect sudden visibility changes. Use low beams and allow extra distance.
Fog redevelops tonight as temperatures dip into the mid-30s. Tuesday turns brighter and warmer, with sunshine pushing highs into the low 50s. That warmth continues Wednesday, peaking near 60 degrees. It may feel springlike, to be fair, but winter remains nearby.
By Thursday, clouds thicken and cooler air returns. Highs fall into the upper 40s. A chance of rain arrives Thursday night, then shifts toward a rain-and-snow mix on Friday as temperatures drop. Latest outlooks show a 10 to 30 percent chance of impactful winter weather late Thursday night into Friday, especially north and east of Omaha.
Gusty winds Friday could lead to rapidly changing road conditions. Wet pavement may refreeze after sunset, increasing the risk of flash freezing. Plan ahead if traveling late week, especially on rural highways.
This first full week of January 2026 brings fog now, warmth midweek, and winter signals by the weekend. Stay weather-aware as conditions evolve.
