Nebraska and Iowa – Strong and potentially damaging winds are impacting large portions of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa on Sunday, creating hazardous travel conditions through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until midnight CST Sunday for much of east-central, northeast, and southeast Nebraska, along with west-central and southwest Iowa.

Northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph. The strongest winds are forecast during the daytime and early evening hours before gradually diminishing overnight.

The warning area includes major population centers such as Omaha, Lincoln, Council Bluffs, Fremont, Bellevue, Papillion, Norfolk, Beatrice, Shenandoah, Red Oak, and Nebraska City, along with dozens of surrounding communities across both states.

Forecasters warn that travel will be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles, including semis, vans, and RVs. In areas where falling or blowing snow is occurring, visibility may be reduced, further complicating driving conditions. Sudden crosswinds could make vehicle control challenging on open roadways.

While the alert is primarily wind-driven, the National Weather Service notes that blowing snow combined with strong gusts may briefly lower visibility, especially in rural and exposed areas.

Residents are advised to use caution if traveling, secure loose outdoor objects, and remain alert for changing road conditions. Motorists should be prepared for sudden gusts, especially on north–south roads.
