Nebraska – Dry grass crackles underfoot this morning as winter officially begins with an unusual twist across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. The air feels cold at first glance, but gusty winds and very low humidity quickly raise concerns beyond frost and ice.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, breezy southwest winds and continued dry conditions today are creating elevated fire danger across parts of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Wind gusts exceed 20 mph at times, while humidity drops low enough to allow fires to spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, especially in rural areas and along open fields.

Temperatures rebound quickly. Highs reach the upper 40s today, then surge into the upper 50s by Monday. That warmth dries fuels even more. Any spark from machinery, discarded cigarettes, or roadside fires could escape control. Fire departments urge residents to secure chains on trailers and avoid activities that create sparks.

Travel conditions remain quiet for now. Roads stay dry across I-80, I-29, and Highway 75. Still, drivers should remain alert for grass fires near roadways that could reduce visibility quickly if one ignites.

By Tuesday and Wednesday, the pattern shifts but stays calm. Sunshine dominates, winds ease, and highs settle into the low-to-mid 50s. To be fair, this feels more like early fall than the first week of winter. That mild stretch sets up favorable Christmas travel conditions across the region.

Christmas Day looks partly sunny and warm, with highs near 60 degrees. No snow or rain is expected locally through midweek. Winter hazards are not gone, but fire danger is today’s main concern.

Delay burning, stay alert in open areas, and report smoke quickly. Are you seeing dry conditions where you live this morning?
