Omaha, Nebraska – Travel across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa could rapidly deteriorate Sunday morning as a powerful wind-driven winter system pushes into the region, creating potential whiteout conditions across major highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Sunday morning through late Sunday night for the Omaha metro, Council Bluffs, and dozens of surrounding communities across east central and northeast Nebraska. Snowfall totals are expected to reach 1 to 3 inches, but wind gusts as strong as 60 mph may create the most dangerous conditions.
Strong winds could blow snow across Interstate 80 near Omaha, Interstate 29 near Council Bluffs, and open rural highways across Dodge, Saunders, Washington, and Madison counties. Visibilities may drop below a quarter mile at times as blowing snow sweeps across exposed roads and bridges.
Communities including Fremont, Blair, Norfolk, Papillion, Bellevue, and Tekamah may see rapidly changing road conditions throughout the day Sunday as drifting snow develops.
Officials warn that even light snowfall can become dangerous when paired with winds this strong. Bridges and overpasses may become slick first as temperatures fall.
Residents are urged to delay unnecessary travel, secure outdoor items ahead of the wind, and prepare for rapidly changing visibility through Sunday night. Additional advisories or upgrades to blizzard warnings may be issued as the storm intensifies
