Omaha, NE – A gray morning sky and crisp December air set the stage for a wintry change sweeping toward the Nebraska–Iowa border. The National Weather Service in Omaha reports that a fast-moving clipper system will bring snow chances Friday evening through Saturday morning, dropping 1 to 3 inches for much of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
After a calm Thursday, conditions will turn colder and breezier by Friday. Forecasters expect light snow to begin after sunset, with slick spots forming quickly as temperatures drop into the teens overnight. Gusty northwest winds up to 20 mph could reduce visibility briefly during heavier bursts of snow.
Drivers along I-80, I-29, and local highways should plan for slippery bridges and ramps, particularly early Saturday. Meteorologists warn that melting snow may refreeze, creating black ice and hazardous travel before sunrise. The snow will taper by midmorning Saturday, but the coldest air of December so far will rush in behind it.
Highs Saturday will stay near 15°F, and by Sunday morning, lows will plummet into the single digits, with wind chills below zero across parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
Five-Day Outlook:
- Friday: Cloudy, chance of snow after 6 p.m., high 31°F, low 13°F.
- Saturday: Snow early, high 15°F, low 4°F.
- Sunday: Sunny, high 19°F, low 14°F.
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high 44°F.
