Omaha, NE – Drivers across northern Nebraska are facing slick travel conditions this morning as snow continues to impact areas near the South Dakota state line, with hazardous roads reported on several major highways.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, roads are snow covered near the South Dakota border, and travelers heading north or east toward central Iowa should be prepared for slippery conditions. Snowfall is slowly expanding south, though the most significant impacts are expected to remain north of the Omaha metro area.

Forecasters report snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches near the South Dakota line, particularly affecting communities near Hartington, Ponca, and areas along Highway 81. Farther south, including between Omaha and Tekamah, snowfall amounts are expected to be lighter, generally up to 1 inch.

Travel impacts are expected to remain north of the Norfolk–Blair–Oakland, Iowa line, with untreated roads, bridges, and ramps posing the greatest risk during the morning hours. Cameras along US Highway 81 near Hartington and US 75 south of Winnebago show snow-covered lanes and reduced traction.

Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions before heading out. The Nebraska Department of Transportation and Iowa DOT recommend avoiding unnecessary travel in areas where roads are completely snow covered.

Conditions should gradually improve later today as snowfall tapers off and road crews continue treatment, but drivers are advised to remain alert for lingering slick spots through the morning.
