Hastings, Nebraska – A sweltering final day of extreme heat will blanket central Nebraska through 9 p.m. Sunday, with heat index values reaching as high as 106°F and strong wind gusts offering only limited relief.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, both an Extreme Heat Warning and Heat Advisory remain in effect across multiple counties, including Adams, Hall, Buffalo, and Dawson. Peak heat index values between 100–106°F are expected from early afternoon into early evening. Southerly wind gusts between 40–45 mph may slightly ease the oppressive conditions but could also increase wildfire risk in dry areas.

Hastings, Grand Island, and Kearney will all see maximum heat indices over 104°F today, with real temperatures hovering in the upper 90s to low 100s. Outdoor activity is strongly discouraged, especially during peak heating between 2–6 p.m. Officials advise residents to remain indoors, stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid strenuous exertion.

Despite the breeze, NWS warns that dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke remain likely without proper cooling or hydration. Sunday marks the final day of this heat wave, with cooler air expected to begin moving in overnight.

⚠️ Warnings remain in effect through 9 p.m. tonight. Another update may be issued if conditions worsen.
