North Platte, Nebraska – A sweltering heatwave is gripping western and central Nebraska, with heat index values expected to reach up to 103°F through late Saturday, prompting a widespread Heat Advisory.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, the advisory runs from 11 a.m. CDT Friday until midnight Saturday, impacting 17 counties including Cherry, Lincoln, Keith, and Custer. High humidity paired with afternoon temperatures in the mid to upper 90s could pose a serious risk of heat-related illness, particularly for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations.
Cities such as North Platte, Valentine, Ogallala, Broken Bow, and Imperial will see the most intense conditions. Local authorities urge residents to limit time outdoors, use air conditioning where possible, and check on elderly neighbors. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also recommends frequent shaded breaks and hydration for those working outside.
With the advisory spanning both Friday and Saturday, this marks one of the earliest and most prolonged heat events of the summer. Overnight relief will be minimal, especially in urban areas.
More advisories may be issued if conditions worsen or extend into Sunday.
