Omaha, Nebraska – Dangerously hot and humid conditions are set to blanket eastern Nebraska this weekend, with heat index values climbing as high as 102°F by Saturday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, heat index values will peak between 95–102°F on Saturday and range from 86–101°F on Sunday across much of the state. Cities including Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, and Beatrice are expected to see the most intense heat between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. each day, when humidity and air temperatures combine to create extreme conditions.
Residents in Lancaster, Douglas, and Madison counties should limit time outdoors, especially in the afternoon hours. Prolonged exposure can increase the risk of heat-related illness. Officials urge people to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Never leave children or animals in closed vehicles, even for a few minutes.
This marks the first significant heat wave of the summer for eastern Nebraska, with additional heat advisories possible if conditions worsen.
Stay alert through the weekend. Further updates and warnings may be issued by local emergency management and the NWS.
