Hastings, Neb. – A dangerous stretch of extreme heat is headed for Nebraska, with heat index values soaring up to 107°F from Friday morning through Sunday evening across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, an Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect for a broad area including Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, York, and as far south as Thayer and Nuckolls counties. Overnight temperatures will offer little relief, lingering in the upper 70s and low 80s, especially in urban centers.

Cities such as Lexington, Holdrege, and Geneva will see elevated risk of heat-related illness, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours. Breezy south winds may offer limited comfort, but outdoor activities are still considered high-risk. Residents are urged to avoid strenuous tasks during peak heat, drink water frequently, and check on elderly neighbors and pets.

Public cooling centers are expected to open in Hall, Buffalo, and Adams counties. Schools and summer programs in the region may adjust hours or cancel outdoor events.

This prolonged heat event is one of the most intense stretches the region has seen this June.

More advisories could be issued as temperatures climb. Residents should stay weather-aware and watch for updates through the weekend.
