North Platte, Nebraska – A heat advisory is in effect for much of central, north-central, and western Nebraska starting Monday, July 21, as the National Weather Service warns of dangerous heat indices reaching up to 102°F. The advisory will be active from 1 p.m. CDT (noon MDT) until 8 p.m. CDT (7 p.m. MDT).
According to the National Weather Service, the combination of high temperatures and humidity will make outdoor conditions dangerously hot, potentially leading to heat-related illnesses. The heat index could reach critical levels across multiple counties, including North Platte, Broken Bow, and Valentine. Those in affected areas are urged to take extra precautions to protect themselves.
The excessive heat is expected to impact travel and outdoor activities. Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned environments, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. If you must work or be outside, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends taking frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas to prevent heat stroke or heat exhaustion. If you or someone you know shows signs of heat illness, seek medical attention immediately.
Residents in affected counties, including Custer, Lincoln, and Hayes, should remain vigilant. The advisory is set to expire at 8 p.m. Monday, but additional alerts could be issued if conditions worsen.
