Omaha, NE – A Heat Advisory is in effect across parts of Nebraska and Iowa Monday, with dangerously high temperatures and humidity expected to push heat index values to 105°F from noon to 8 p.m.. The National Weather Service issued the advisory for areas including Omaha, Lincoln, and Council Bluffs, urging residents to take precautions in the sweltering conditions.
According to the NWS, the heat combined with high humidity will create an environment where heat illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke are a real threat. Communities in southwest Iowa and east-central, northeast, and southeast Nebraska should expect oppressive conditions that may be life-threatening without proper care.
In Omaha, the intense heat is expected to peak during the afternoon, with high temperatures climbing into the 90s and heat index values soaring beyond 100°F. Residents are advised to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces and to drink plenty of fluids. Those without air conditioning should visit cooling centers if possible.
Travelers and outdoor workers should avoid strenuous activities, especially between noon and 4 p.m., when temperatures will be at their hottest. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with respiratory or heart conditions, are urged to stay inside as much as possible.
As the advisory extends until 8 p.m. Monday, it’s critical to monitor conditions throughout the day. Additional heat advisories or warnings could follow depending on the intensity of the heatwave.
