Omaha, NE – Fire weather concerns are ramping up across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa as warm, dry, and breezy conditions settle in through the weekend.
The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley says very high fire danger is expected today, with highs climbing into the low to mid-80s. Northwest winds will gust between 15 and 20 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 17–30 percent.
Conditions worsen on Saturday, when a Fire Weather Watch is in effect for the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-80s to low 90s, with southwest winds gusting 20 to 25 mph and humidity falling even lower—between 13 and 20 percent.
The combination of heat, wind, and dry air creates an environment where fires can start easily and spread rapidly.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and any activities that could produce sparks, such as using equipment or discarding cigarettes improperly.
The greatest fire danger is expected between late morning and evening both days, especially in open and grassy areas.
