North Platte, NE – The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of Nebraska, including the Eastern Panhandle, Sandhills, and Niobrara Valley, due to strong winds and low humidity. The warning is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. CDT on Thursday, with a Fire Weather Watch extending into Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, winds will range from 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 13 percent, creating conditions favorable for rapid fire spread. Temperatures could reach 62 degrees in affected areas.
The warning covers Fire Weather Zones 204 and 206, including Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge, Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, and the Nebraska National Forest. Additionally, Fire Weather Zone 208, encompassing Niobrara Valley, Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, and Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest, is also at risk.
Authorities urge residents to avoid any activities that could spark fires, such as outdoor burning or discarding cigarette butts. Dry and gusty conditions increase the likelihood of wildfires starting and spreading quickly.
A Red Flag Warning means critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or imminent, while a Fire Weather Watch indicates potential for such conditions. Residents should stay informed and follow local fire safety guidelines.
