North Platte, NE – A Red Flag Warning is in effect until 8 p.m. CDT Friday for much of western, central, and southwest Nebraska as gusty winds and dry conditions raise the risk of rapid wildfire spread.
According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, the warning covers several zones including the Eastern Panhandle, Sandhills, Frenchman Basin, Loess Plains, and the Loup Rivers Basin. A Fire Weather Watch is also in place for Saturday afternoon through evening across western and north central Nebraska, signaling continued high-risk fire conditions.
Winds are expected to reach sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts climbing as high as 45 mph. Relative humidity could fall to 15 percent, with temperatures peaking near 59 degrees. No lightning is anticipated during this period.
Officials warn that any fires that ignite may spread uncontrollably and urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and activities that could spark flames.
Residents are advised to secure loose debris, postpone campfires, and monitor emergency alerts. Local authorities and fire agencies remain on standby, urging vigilance through the weekend as conditions remain volatile.
