Hastings, NE – Fires could ignite easily and spread uncontrollably across central Nebraska and north central Kansas by late Saturday morning as extremely dry air and heat take hold.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday through 4 a.m. Sunday for cities including Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, and York, along with areas in north central Kansas such as Phillips and Smith counties. Relative humidity will drop as low as 5 percent during peak afternoon heating, while south to southwest winds increase to 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.
The greatest threat arrives after midnight. A strong cold front will surge south, abruptly shifting winds to the north with gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph into early Sunday. Any fires that start Saturday could rapidly change direction and accelerate overnight, especially across open fields and rural roadways like Highway 281 and Interstate 80 corridors.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, delay fieldwork involving machinery, and secure anything that could spark fires. Even small ignitions could spread across multiple counties in minutes.
Conditions improve toward sunrise Sunday as humidity recovers, but warnings remain in effect through early morning and additional alerts are possible.
