Hastings, NE – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Hastings and surrounding Nebraska counties today from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., with critical fire weather conditions expected. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, as low humidity, high temperatures, and gusty winds up to 50 mph create ideal conditions for rapid fire spread. This warning covers areas along and south of Interstate 80, affecting counties from Buffalo to Nuckolls.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings, strong south-southwest winds will reach speeds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, further increasing the fire risk. Relative humidity is expected to dip as low as 25%, particularly west of Clarks to Oxford. Temperatures will reach the mid-80s in north-central Kansas, and mid-70s in areas near Hastings, adding to the fire hazards.
Residents in the affected region are advised to exercise caution. The NWS warns that any fires ignited under these conditions could spread uncontrollably, urging people to avoid using outdoor grills, dispose of cigarettes responsibly, and postpone outdoor work that could produce sparks. Travelers on Interstate 80 and nearby highways should remain vigilant for blowing dust, which may reduce visibility in spots.
Looking ahead, the Hastings area forecast indicates a cooler shift. Wednesday brings a chance of morning showers with highs around 49°F, dropping further to a low of 34°F by night. The region will clear up by Thursday, with sunny skies and a high near 62°F, followed by a warming trend toward Friday.
