Omaha, Nebraska – Drivers across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa should brace for dense fog and strong thunderstorms Tuesday that could slow commutes and increase accidents. Low visibility and pounding rain are expected to hit hardest along I-29 and across the Missouri River Valley, creating dangerous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, fog will thicken early Tuesday, reducing visibility to near zero in spots before storms fire by late morning. Some storms may turn severe into Tuesday night, producing damaging winds and hail. Rainfall totals could reach three-quarters of an inch, especially in low-lying areas.

City impacts will be significant. In Omaha, morning fog could delay school bus routes and airport traffic, while Council Bluffs faces similar hazards on I-80. Emergency crews urge drivers to use headlights, slow down, and leave extra space on slick roads.

Farther south, communities along Highway 34 near Plattsmouth and Glenwood should watch for standing water. Localized flooding could briefly close small county roads if storms linger Tuesday afternoon.

The threat eases midweek as drier, cooler air arrives. Wednesday will bring mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-70s before fall warmth returns late week.

Travelers should prepare for delays and keep devices charged in case of power outages. Additional advisories remain possible through Tuesday night.
