Omaha, NE – An Arctic blast will grip eastern Nebraska and western Iowa Sunday through Tuesday, with dangerous wind chills as low as -30°F. Residents should prepare for frostbite risks and disrupted travel along major routes, including Interstate 80.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, a cold weather advisory begins at midnight Saturday and extends through noon Tuesday. Overnight lows will dip to near -5°F, with wind chills reaching -30°F during morning hours. Blustery north winds of 20 to 30 mph will compound the frigid conditions, creating life-threatening exposure risks.
Sunday morning will bring wind chills of -15 to -30°F across the area. These conditions will persist each morning through Tuesday, making it critical to limit outdoor activity and dress in layers, including hats and gloves. Frostbite can occur on exposed skin within 30 minutes.
High temperatures for Sunday and Monday will struggle to reach the teens, with overnight lows plunging below zero. Tuesday offers some relief with highs nearing 20°F, but wind chills will remain hazardous early in the day.
Travelers along I-80 and other major roads should use caution, as gusty winds may lead to drifting snow and slippery surfaces. Schools and businesses are advised to prepare for potential delays or closures if conditions worsen.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to climb by midweek, with highs in the upper 30s on Wednesday providing a brief reprieve.
