Norfolk, Nebraska – Snow-covered roads will develop before 7 p.m., and drivers across northeast Nebraska and western Iowa should prepare for slick highways during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of eastern Nebraska and portions of southwest and west-central Iowa. In Antelope, Pierce, Wayne, Madison and Stanton counties, including Norfolk, Wayne and Neligh, up to 3 inches of additional snow will fall through midnight Thursday. Winds may gust as high as 35 mph, reducing visibility on open stretches of Highway 81 and US-275.

Farther south and east, including Lincoln, Seward, Fremont, Nebraska City and Red Oak, snow totals between 2 and 4 inches are expected through 6 a.m. Friday. Gusty winds near 35 mph could create brief blowing snow, especially along I-80, Highway 77 and I-29.

In Fremont County, Iowa, and Otoe County, Nebraska, including Hamburg and Nebraska City, up to 3 inches of snow will continue overnight. Slippery bridges and overpasses will be the first to ice over as temperatures drop.

Motorists should slow down, increase following distance and check 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling. Snow will gradually taper from northwest to southeast overnight, but slick travel may linger into the early Friday commute. Additional updates are possible if bands of heavier snow redevelop.
