Omaha, NE – A powerful winter storm is bringing blizzard conditions and dangerous travel across parts of Nebraska today, according to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley.
Forecasters warn that periods of whiteout conditions are likely from mid-morning through the evening, making travel extremely hazardous across much of the region.
Blizzard Conditions Expected
Strong winds and falling snow will combine to create dangerous conditions.
Meteorologists say the storm could produce:
- Wind gusts up to 65 mph
- Blowing and drifting snow
- Rapidly reduced visibility
- Near whiteout conditions at times
These conditions may make travel difficult to nearly impossible in some areas.
Snowfall Forecast
Snow totals are expected to vary, but the highest accumulations could reach 2 to 4 inches across northeast Nebraska and parts of western Iowa.
Even modest snowfall amounts could become dangerous because strong winds will blow snow across roads and highways.
Possible Power Outages
The National Weather Service warns that strong winds and snow accumulating on power lines could lead to isolated power outages across the region.
Very Cold Air Arrives Monday
After the storm passes, very cold temperatures are expected Monday morning, with wind chills dropping between 10 and 24 degrees below zero.
Safety Advice
Officials recommend residents take precautions during the storm:
- Avoid unnecessary travel
- Monitor weather updates
- Prepare for possible power outages
Meteorologists say conditions could remain hazardous until winds begin to decrease later tonight.
