Hastings, NE – A powerful blizzard is set to impact south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas beginning late Tuesday night, bringing hazardous travel conditions and potential power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. CDT Wednesday for affected areas, including Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, Phillipsburg, and Beloit. Snow accumulations between 2 to 6 inches are expected, with localized higher amounts possible. Wind gusts could reach 65 mph, creating whiteout conditions.
The storm will likely make travel extremely dangerous. Blowing and drifting snow may reduce visibility to less than 1/4 mile, making roads slick and hazardous. Bridges and overpasses will be particularly treacherous.
Strong winds and heavy snow could cause tree damage and power outages, especially as wet snow accumulates on power lines and branches. The storm is also expected to impact the Wednesday morning commute, with slippery roads and reduced visibility posing significant challenges for drivers.
Residents are advised to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If travel is unavoidable, carrying a winter survival kit is recommended. Those who become stranded should remain in their vehicles and seek assistance.
For the latest road conditions, call 511 in your respective state. Authorities urge residents to take precautions ahead of the storm as blizzard conditions could intensify rapidly.
