Omaha, Nebraska – Smoke drifting into eastern Nebraska tonight could make the air unhealthy to breathe within hours, especially for children, older adults, and anyone with respiratory conditions.
According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Environment and Energy, an Air Quality Alert takes effect at 10 p.m. Wednesday and continues until 10 a.m. Thursday. Fine particulate pollution (PM2.5) is expected to push the Air Quality Index into the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range across Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, and surrounding communities.
The smoke, tied to prescribed burning across the region, may create hazy skies and reduced air clarity overnight into the Thursday morning commute. Areas including Douglas, Lancaster, Sarpy, and Cass counties could see the most noticeable impacts, with air monitors already tracking shifting plume patterns.
Sensitive groups are urged to limit time outdoors, avoid strenuous activity, and take frequent breaks if exposure is unavoidable. Residents may notice coughing, throat irritation, or shortness of breath as concentrations increase.
Drivers should also be aware that localized smoke could slightly reduce visibility on roadways like I-80 and Highway 75 during early morning hours.
Air quality is expected to improve after 10 a.m. Thursday as conditions shift, though additional alerts could follow if smoke lingers across the region.
