Indianapolis, IN – The US National Weather Service in Indianapolis warns that much colder air is surging into central Indiana today, setting the stage for near-record cold temperatures tonight.

Afternoon highs will struggle to reach the 20s for most areas, with wind chills in the single digits to near zero this morning, especially northwest of the city. By tonight, lows will range from 0° to 10° north of I-70 and 10° to 20° south, with wind chills dropping between 0° and -10° north of Indianapolis.

The Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite or hypothermia. Pets should also be brought indoors, and precautions should be taken to protect pipes and plants from the cold.

Despite the frigid start, a gradual warm-up is expected by the weekend, though temperatures will remain below seasonal averages.
