Scranton, Pa. – Heavy rain is set to soak Northeast Pennsylvania and the Catskills starting at noon Wednesday, with a Flood Watch stretching through 5 a.m. Friday and the threat of 2–3 inches of rainfall causing localized flooding and road closures.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the Flood Watch covers Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, Montrose, Honesdale, Milford, and neighboring communities, where multiple rounds of rain showers are expected. The heaviest downpours could quickly overwhelm low-lying roads and small streams, especially in Wayne, Pike, and Lackawanna counties, as well as Sullivan and Delaware counties in New York.

Emergency managers urge drivers to avoid flooded roadways, as water may rise rapidly and cut off routes such as I-81, Route 6, and local secondary roads. Residents should prepare by charging cell phones, moving valuables to higher ground, and staying updated on potential school or business delays. Power outages and brief basement flooding are possible in the hardest-hit areas.

This rain event marks one of the summer’s most significant so far for Northeast Pennsylvania, with totals of 1.5–3 inches likely by Friday afternoon. Scattered showers may linger into the weekend, and additional advisories are possible if rain persists.

Flood Watch remains in effect through early Friday, with new updates expected as rainfall continues.
