Chicago, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms are tracking across northern Illinois and into northwestern Indiana this morning, with damaging winds and torrential rain expected to intensify through 3 p.m. Wednesday, particularly east of I-55, including Joliet, Aurora, and the southern Chicago metro.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storms will continue developing eastward from west-central Illinois and may trigger localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and along streams and creeks. Counties in shaded region #1, including Will, Cook, and Lake, face the highest risk for dangerous downpours and gusts topping 40 mph. Region #2 near Ottawa may also see severe wind impacts.

Travel along I-55 and I-80 could become hazardous by midday. Residents should prepare for possible road closures, power outages, and rapidly rising water. Use caution when driving and avoid flooded roads.

Lightning, gusty winds, and isolated downpours are likely even outside the core risk areas. The Chicago metro and parts of northwest Indiana, including Gary and Valparaiso, are advised to monitor warnings and have multiple ways to receive alerts.

Storms are expected to weaken after 3 p.m., but further advisories may follow if cells redevelop later tonight.
