Farmingdale, NY – Families across Long Island can take advantage of free child car seat safety checks this month as New York State Police Troop L hosts appointment-only inspections aimed at preventing serious injuries during holiday travel.

According to the New York State Police, more than 90% of child car seats are not used or installed correctly, a statistic that can significantly increase the risk of injury in a crash. To address the issue, Troop L will offer free safety checks on Friday, December 13; Friday, December 20; and Monday, December 30.

The inspections will be held at 7140 Republic Airport, East Farmingdale, NY 11735, within Nassau County on Long Island. Certified technicians will examine child safety seats, ensure proper installation, and provide guidance to parents and caregivers on correct use based on the child’s age, weight, and height.

Officials stress that the event is by appointment only. Residents must schedule in advance by calling 631-756-3328 or texting 516-531-3231. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

With increased travel during the holiday season, state police say ensuring car seats are installed properly can be a lifesaving step. Even minor installation errors—such as loose straps or improper anchoring—can reduce the effectiveness of a safety seat during a collision.

Parents, grandparents, and caregivers who regularly transport children are encouraged to participate, even if they believe their seat is installed correctly.
