Nashville, Tenn. – Outdoor plans across Middle Tennessee could quickly become dangerous Tuesday as oppressive heat gives way to the potential for severe thunderstorms by late afternoon. Heat index values are expected to climb between 105 and 110 degrees before storms develop, creating a day with multiple weather hazards that could affect travel, outdoor work and evening activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for the entire Middle Tennessee region until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Residents should expect dangerous heat capable of causing heat-related illness without proper hydration or frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade. Officials urge people to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight clothing and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
The weather pattern is expected to shift late Tuesday afternoon as thunderstorms move into the region. The Storm Prediction Center places much of Middle Tennessee under a Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk for severe weather through Tuesday night. The primary threats include damaging wind gusts and localized flash flooding, while an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
Communities including Nashville, Clarksville, Murfreesboro, Columbia, Cookeville, McMinnville and surrounding areas should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions. Anyone with evening plans should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, especially overnight alerts that can wake them if warnings are issued.
