Nashville, TN – A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested in connection with a December shooting that left a 62-year-old man wounded after an alleged robbery attempt near a North Nashville grocery store.

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, TITANS Unit detectives arrested the suspect on Wednesday in connection with the December 2 shooting outside the Monroe Street Kroger. Investigators say the victim had purchased candy from the teen shortly before the incident.

Police say the teen allegedly asked the man for a ride home due to cold weather conditions. The victim agreed and later stopped in the 900 block of 26th Avenue North to let the teen out of the vehicle.

According to investigators, the suspect then allegedly produced a handgun and demanded the victim’s cash and medication. When the victim attempted to push the teen out of the vehicle, police say he was shot once in the abdomen.

The victim survived the shooting and was treated for his injuries. Detectives with the department’s Non-Lethal Shooting Unit later identified Fitzgerald as the suspect following the investigation.

Police say the teen was located on Wednesday and found in possession of a nine-millimeter pistol. He has been charged in Juvenile Court with especially aggravated robbery. Due to his age, additional case details are limited.

The arrest brings closure to a case that raised safety concerns in the North Nashville area, particularly during winter months when cold-weather crimes can increase.
