Tennessee – Cold air hangs low this morning, brushing across wet pavement and bare trees, while a much stronger winter threat organizes just days away. For now, rain and clouds dominate, but winter weather is lining up fast. By late week, conditions could turn hazardous across Middle Tennessee.

According to the National Weather Service in Nashville, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. Heavy snow and ice are possible, with snow accumulations over 6 inches expected in parts of the region. Ice totals could exceed a quarter inch, especially south of Interstate 40, while areas north of I-40 face the highest snow risk.

Nashville sees mild conditions briefly today and Thursday, with highs near the upper 40s. That window closes quickly. By Friday, temperatures fall into the 30s, with snow developing by evening. Snow intensity increases Friday night, and heavy snow is likely Saturday, when highs struggle to reach the low 20s. Gusty winds could worsen travel and increase the risk of power outages where ice builds on trees and lines.

Travel across I-40, I-65, and I-24 may become nearly impossible during peak snowfall. Slushy roads are expected to flash-freeze as temperatures drop, creating slick conditions even after snow tapers. Residents should complete travel plans early, charge devices, prepare alternate heat sources, and check on vulnerable neighbors.

Looking ahead, 6–10 day outlooks keep colder-than-normal air locked over the eastern U.S., while storm systems remain active across the central states. Winter does not loosen its grip quickly.
