Naples, Fla. – Drivers across Collier County face reduced visibility and worsening air quality early Thursday as smoke drifts across I-75, US-41 and surrounding roadways before the morning commute peaks. Conditions may change quickly within short distances, creating sudden drops in visibility before 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Miami, smoke from a wildfire burning in Big Cypress National Preserve is moving west and southwest across inland Collier County. The smoke plume is affecting areas near Naples, Marco Island and other coastal communities, with the greatest impact expected through mid-morning Thursday.

Visibility may fall below five miles at times on stretches of I-75, especially near Golden Gate and east of Collier Boulevard. Portions of US-41 and State Road 29 could also experience hazy conditions. While widespread road closures are not anticipated, motorists should prepare for rapidly changing visibility and allow extra following distance.

Air quality may deteriorate in affected areas, particularly in low-lying inland communities. Sensitive groups, including children, older adults and individuals with respiratory conditions, should limit prolonged outdoor activity until smoke disperses later in the day.

If traveling early Thursday, use low-beam headlights in smoky areas and avoid sudden braking. Keep vehicle windows closed and set air systems to recirculate to reduce smoke exposure.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve as winds shift and daytime mixing increases. Additional statements may be issued if smoke coverage expands or lingers into the afternoon.
